A capacity crowd of more than 13,000 “amened”, laughed out loud, and sang during the rousing commencement address of noted professor, author and popular syndicated radio host Michael Eric Dyson at Winston-Salem State University’s 2012 Commencement on Saturday May 12, at 9:45 a.m., at Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum.

Approximately 1,200 undergraduate and graduate students participated in the ceremony.  Dyson along with Judge Joseph D.  Johnson, a WSSU alumnus and district judge in Shawnee County, Kansas, and Dr. Merdis J. McCarter, WSSU senior associate provost for Academic Affairs and Undergraduate Programs, received honorary degrees.
