Demetrius Jones, a senior political science major at Winston-Salem State University, was selected to represent the North Carolina region at the 10th anniversary program for the Millennium Momentum Foundation Inc. held in Washington in July.

Jones was one of 15 young people nationally invited to the anniversary celebration. He joined members of the Obama administration, representatives from the U.S. Department of Education and executives from the foundation’s board for a program that included a presentation of the findings and impact of the White House Young American Series.

The series was designed to identify the needs and civic values of young Americans.

Jones previously had served as the only African-American among the four students who represented the United States at the 21st International Youth Leadership Conference in Prague, Czech Republic, in 2011. In addition he was nominated and appointed to serve as the United States Liaison/Country Contact for Civic Concepts International (CCI) – a global enterprise geared towards supporting youth leaders in their efforts to reforming international policy and cultural understanding. (This is the organization that sponsored the conferences he attended in Prague, Czech Republic and Dubai, United Arab Emirates.)

He is also a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh’s Hesselbein Global Academy for Student Leadership & Civc Engagement- 1 of 50 students selected globally (25 from the USA and 25 selected from abroad.)

He was the first college student accepted into the Leadership Winston-Salem program. He also served as a legislative aide in the U.S. House of Representatives with the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation.

The White House Young American Series and the anniversary program were part of the foundation’s efforts to increase the number of students and young professionals from various ethnic backgrounds in public service fields. This was done with education, mentoring and leadership training.

Currently he is serving the Obama campaign as a 2012 Organizing Fellow and is working for the 2012 Democratic National Convention on the Special Events and Steering Committee.
